Speaking in an interview with NTA, the retired General dismissed claims that he ever plotted to seize power from Goodluck Jonathan while the latter served as Acting President.
To illustrate the atmosphere of the time, Dambazau recounted a specific late-night phone call from Jonathan. At approximately 2:00 a.m., the Acting President reportedly contacted him in a state of concern, stating he had received intelligence that 50 truckloads of soldiers were advancing from Zaria toward Abuja to stage a takeover.
Dambazau recalled reassuring the nervous leader, urging him not to be misled by false information or succumb to the stress of such reports. He maintained that his loyalty was steadfast, telling Jonathan to rest and asserting that no such military movement was taking place.
This disclosure serves to clarify his role during a sensitive moment in Nigeria's democratic history, emphasizing his commitment to constitutional order over military intervention.
