No fewer than six persons have been confirmed d+ad, while two others sustained severe inj¥rues in a road acc+dent at NASFAT Junction along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.
The cr+sh, which occurred at about 2:36 p.m. on Thursday, involved a Mazda commercial bus and a Volvo truck.
The 18-seater bus was reportedly travelling from Lagos when it ran under a truck coming from Ibadan that was making a U-turn near the NASFAT area.
Confirming the incident in Abeokuta, the Public Relations Officer of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Ogun Sector Command, Afolabi Odunsi-Oyewole, said eight persons were involved in the cr+sh.
He attributed the acc+dent to over-speeding, adding that FRSC personnel from the Mowe Unit and Ibafo Outpost, an ambulance team from the Ojota Unit Command, officers of the MTD RCCG Police Division, and TRACE operatives from the Mowe Division swiftly responded to the scene.
According to Odunsi-Oyewole, some inj¥red victims were taken to an unknown hospital by good Samaritans before the arrival of rescue teams, while others were conveyed to Famobis Hospital, Lotto, for medical attention. The bodies of the deceased were taken to the morgue.
He said, “At about 14:36hrs on January 1, 2026, an auto cr+sh occurred along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway at NASFAT Junction. Eight people were involved; six were k+lled and two sustained inj¥ries. The cause of the cr+sh was over-speeding.”
Meanwhile, the FRSC Sector Commander in Ogun State, Corps Commander Akinwumi Fasakin, has ordered a full investigation into the incident.
The accident comes just days after a separate road cr+sh reportedly involving Nigerian-British boxer Anthony Joshua, which left him inj¥red and claimed the lives of two others.
Many of the victims were young people who had gathered to welcome the New Year. “This tragedy occurred in a place that is naturally associated with life and joy,” President Parmelin said.
According to Frédéric Gisler, commander of the cantonal police, about 40 people d+ed and roughly 115 others were inj¥red, most of them seriously. Smoke was first spotted around 1:30 a.m., prompting emergency calls shortly after.
Rescue efforts involved 10 helicopters and 40 ambulances transporting victims to hospitals. Medical facilities in the area were overwhelmed, with emergency wards and operating rooms reaching full capacity.
Local official Mathias Reynard urged residents to avoid obstructing emergency services, saying, “If you want to be useful, be careful.”
Several b¥rn victims were airlifted to Zurich, while 22 severely inj¥red patients were taken to a hospital in Lausanne. Hospital officials said most survivors were aged between 16 and 26.
Authorities are still working to identify the victims. Given Crans-Montana’s popularity as a tourist destination, officials said foreign nationals are likely among the d+ad and inj¥red.
